Can We Rise Above General Goals?

Most of us have general aims and goals in life.

Build a good career or business, earn a sufficient income to support a certain lifestyle. Own a house, marry, have kids. Have a social life, stay connected with friends and well-wishers. Travel to see places, vacation, have fun, etc.

Is there anything wrong there? No, nothing, unless you think so.

While general aims are good, it is important to understand that we all—right from childhood—have been prepped by a society that sets all these general goals for us. So, actually speaking, these are not your goals, but goals that have been set by default, and in general.

When you default, you stay with the crowd, feeling “fitted in” and safe.

What about those who choose to not default, the outliers?

Throughout human history, the outliers are the ones who have brought progress to mankind. If it weren’t for them, we would have stayed like animals. The pace of human evolution is actually determined by the number of outliers at any given point in time.

If you’re bored of being general, here is what you can do. . . .

No, you don’t have to change your whole life or leave out any of the general goals to be an outlier.

Outliers are the ones who spend time experimenting with something new, taking risks with their time, energy, and money. Success or failure is secondary.

When you leave out the qualifiers of “success” or “failure” from a goal, a goal becomes easy to add to your daily life.

To be an outlier, add a single new goal without analyzing its potential for success or failure. Find a goal that is worth experimenting with; that is worth your time, energy, and money.

By doing this, you can still be with the crowd, but you now stand a bit taller and see what many cannot: you are now an outlier!
