Complex Dependencies and the Diffusion of Power

To win in today’s world, you need a concentration of power.

Businesses win by beating their competition. Politicians win by playing fitting politics. Evolution wins by the law of “Natural Selection” and “survival of the fittest.”

. . . Big businesses, with their money and power to employ the world’s top talent, squash the competition, which has less money—yet the capacity to make use of extraordinary talent.

. . . Politicians, with their money, influence and negotiating power—win.

. . . Evolution has the power to destroy species that fail—by destroying, it wins.

What if businesses, politicians, and natural evolution itself lost the concentrated power they possess?

Imagine if there were thousands of businesses that all had the money they needed to hire top talent: Would they be able to defeat or dominate each other?

What about the existence of many equally strong countries, with strong politicians—would they be able to overpower each other?

Would human intervention into the evolution and its mighty strategy of natural selection cause dying species to live longer? (Humans might not have this power yet, but with genetics and cloning technologies advancing every year, we might be able to save species and restore extinct species as well.)

When there are multiple strong entities, diffusion of power happens, giving rise to more and more complex inter-dependencies.

Look at the world today—more businesses are more complexly inter-dependent than ever on many other businesses. Many countries have complex intermingled dependencies with multiple other countries.

Armed with ever advancing research in genetics, molecular biology, DNA fingerprinting, and cloning, humans might soon deploy power diffusion in matters of evolution itself.

The more complex inter-dependencies that exist between different entities, the more we’ll see a diffusion of power. More diffusion of power makes it much less possible for a single entity to win or dominate.

Encourage complex dependencies and encourage many heroes, in order to support the diffusion of power. Make space for many to win.

With more power diffusion happening in the future, chances will be greater for all to win.
