Many organizations and large businesses want to bring objectivity to almost every aspect of work they do.
Objectivity mainly to gauge status and progress, or to gauge employee skill levels. Gauge provides measurement, and measurement leads to understanding of how far or near we are to reaching our goals.
Objectivity —> Gauge —> Measure —> Goals
Objectivity works well when it comes to mechanics, computers, software, robots and a whole bunch of other tools that humans have created for automation.
Where it fails is when we try applying it to humans, their emotions and their decisions. There are limited gains when we put an objective framework around the heart, soul and magical work that humans do.
Next time you’re setting goals or writing performance reviews, sure be objective. But only till the extent that doesn’t treat your human teammates as mere resources.
Feel better to include feelings, emotions and elements that make us human and not just machines.
